Cusco – Machu Picchu – Sacred Valley – Puerto Maldonado Jungle

Physical difficulty : Medium

A classic itinerary with walk at high levels and a Jungle excursion. This journey will take you into the heart of the Incan Empire, exploring the impressive sites of Sacsayhuaman and other surrounding sites around the city of Cusco, such as Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, before reaching Machu Picchu. You will then continue to the city of Puerto Maldonado, from where you will take a boat to your lodge. You will be merged into an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna, and will enjoy the huge biodiversity that the jungle offers. This is one of the richest natural areas on earth and it is known as the “biological capital of the world”. It’s best to take it easy this morning to let your body adjust to the altitude. Both lunch and dinner are on your own. After lunch, you will set out on grand tour of Cusco, the former capital of the once vast Incan Empire. We visit Cusco’s impressive Plaza de Armas and both the Spanish cathedral and Incan temple of the sun, Qoricancha. After the first part of the tour, we visit the archeological site above the city that were considered an essential part of the ancient capital. We start from Sacsayhuaman, where Inti Raymi the Festival of the Sun, is held during the Summer Solstice, Tambomachay, the Temple of the Sacred Waters, which is a marvel of hydraulic engineering and Q´enqo where we will see the remains of a ceremonial site used for fertility rites and for celebrations of the solstice and equinox. *An extra day in Cusco can be added upon request as well as any additional activities and meals.

After breakfast we set out into the Urubamba Valley, also known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will start our visit at Pisac Ruins, one of the most beautiful archeological site that combines a beautiful architectural structure with a stunning landscape. Pisac site is located on the highest hill of the city, on a dry and rocky surface. Then we will have some time to have lunch and recover energies to continue with the tour. Finally, we head deeper into the Sacred Valley and visit the Inca town of Ollantaytambo. At the end of the tour you will be transferred back to your Hotel in Cusco. *An overnight in the Sacred Valley can be added upon request, as well as additional activities and meals.

  • Day 4: Machu Picchu & Overnight in Cusco (B, S)

After breakfast we catch the early train to the town of Aguas Calientes and we will then continue by bus to the Machu Picchu citadel. This day you will enjoy a full tour of the lost city and have lunch on your own after the tour. In the afternoon we say farewell to Machu Picchu as we take the train to reach Poroy station, where transportation will be waiting for you to bring you to Cusco. After breakfast at your hotel you will be transferred to Cusco airport to catch your flight to Puerto Maldonado. After a short flight, we will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to the lodge office, to store your extra luggage. From there we will continue on our bus to the dock located in the native community “Infierno” from where we board our canoe and start a one hour and a half journey to the lodge. During the trip we will have lunch on board and you will have the opportunity to see caimans, turtles and capybaras. Upon your arrival at the lodge, you will be received with a friendly welcome drink to make you feel at home. After a brief chance to rest, we take a short night-hike to see nocturnal rainforest animals. Once back at the lodge, you will have dinner with our guide and some of the Resident Naturalists who are more than available to answer any questions you may have. * You can always take this tour before the trip to Cusco. Please ask our travel specialists and they will help you customize it!

  • Day 6: Cocococha Oxbox Lake & Overnight in Lodge (B, L, D)

To see the giant otters you will have to get up very early and walk with our guide approximately 5 ½ km to reach the Cocococha oxbow lake. On the way you will have the opportunity to observe plants, exotic insects, colorful butterflies, birds, monkeys and, with a bit of luck, perhaps some of the large mammals. After arriving at the lake, we will hide in a strategic hiding place and will wait for the otters to appear to be observed. While waiting we will take the chance to refresh and recharge energies. Afterwards, canoes will be available for us to go for a short ride around the lake, watching the wildlife on the shoreline. Back in the lodge, you will have lunch and have free afternoon for resting. Before the sunset you can hike to the Sunset Point and enjoy the beautiful Amazon rainforest sunset.
